Ann Page: Serial Marathoner

50 Marathon's in 50 States before she turns 50

April 22, 2005

When talking to Ann Page you never feel a sense of regret for the commitment that she has taken on. Her goal is strong and you get nothing but smiles while she tells you the stories of her continuing journey.

It all began for her when a couple of friends who had already run a Marathon talked her into training for one in 2000. Ann then searched for a training program and found Galloway which happened to be the first year the program came to Houston. A college short distance runner would now train for her first Marathon, "Marine Corp". She remembers fondly her first double digit training run of 10 miles to the George R. Brown Convention as if it were just yesterday. Once she completed Marine Corp. she went on to do the Houston Marathon 3 months later, the Austin Marathon one month after Houston, hence a Serial Marathoner was born. Her first 3 marathons in 4 months was just a sign of things to come. Ann then kidded with me about needing a twelve step program for her addiction. It wasn't until she had 7 marathons behind her that she had met someone who was doing the 50 marathon's in 50 states and told Ann all she needed to know. In order to be a member of this 50 states club you already have to have 10 marathon's run in 10 different states. As of this article Ann has run 32 marathon's in 29 different states. She is doing Vancouver this weekend which would make her 30th state. Like the 50 marathon's in 50 states wasn't enough, she applies the "before she turn's 50" to it. She will turn 50 in April 2008 and has talked her two sister's (one older, one younger) to run her 50th with her which is tenatively set for Alaska. The logistics of this goal gets complicated because she does work, if you have ever traveled to do a marathon you know you possibly have to take time off of work. It amazed me to learn that she does not take time off and chooses to fly out late Friday night or early Saturday morning and returns on Marathon day. Monday morning, this serial marathoner is back doing her job like Superman returning to the Daily Planet news desk as Clark Kent. She probably has a cape in her desk drawer.
